RSS and Social Media

What the heck is RSS, Social Media, Twitter, Podcasting and related terms?

RSS

The Crime in America.Net RSS feed (http://crimeinamerica.net/?feed=rss2) provides subscribers with a means to stay informed about the latest news, publications and other announcements from the site.

Many people, however, do not understand the process of obtaining a website’s latest entries via RSS. The simplest explanation is that a site’s new material is pushed to you rather than you searching for it.

For example, go to “Google Reader” in your Google Account and copy and paste the entire feed address into “Add a Subscription.” When you return to “Google Reader,” you see the latest entries for the site. It’s the same for Yahoo and other news sites. You can even have the latest material from the site appear on your desktop.

What is an RSS feed?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It’s an easy way for you to keep up with news and information that’s important to you, and helps you avoid the conventional methods of browsing or searching for information on websites.

As to related terms such as social media, Twitter, podcasting ect., please go to http://www.youtube.com/user/leelefever#play/uploads/11/MpIOClX1jPE.

The Common Craft store on YouTube provides simple explanations for these and many additional terms. Please do not be put off by their simplicity. Sometimes, simplicity is just what you need to learn or to explain terms to others.
