Highlights

“Last year we saw more officers shot in the line of duty than any other since the National Fraternal Order of Police began recording this data in late 2015, and this year is not far behind.”

If one adds the dangerous nature of the job with high numbers of law enforcement officers shot or assaulted and tens of thousands leaving, it greatly adds to the complexity of crime control and citizen safety.

The data below comes from the National Fraternal Order Of Police for deaths and shootings of police officers thus far in 2022. A year-end report will be released in mid-January.

Context From Other Sources

There have been over 32,000 police officers’ deaths since 1786 with some of the highest numbers coming in 2020 (373) and 2021 (472) per the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, many due to the effects of COVID.

Nationally, 60,105 law enforcement officers were assaulted while performing their duties in 2020. These assaults were reported to the FBI by 9,895 law enforcement agencies (editor’s note, out of 18,000 police agencies-thus an undercount). Based on these reports, there were 4,071 more officers assaulted in 2020 than the 56,034 assaults reported in 2019.

The National Fraternal Order of Police reports that as of midnight on 19 December, there have been 323 officers shot in the line of duty so far in 2022 (+7% from 2020 YTD; +13% from 2019 YTD).

Of those officers shot, 60 of them were killed by gunfire (+28% from 2020 YTD; +23% from 2019 YTD).

There have been 87 ambush-style attacks on law enforcement officers this year. These ambush-style attacks have resulted in 124 officers shot, 31 of whom were killed by gunfire.

The number of ambush-style attacks listed does not include the countless incidents where an officer was shot at but not struck by gunfire during an ambush-style attack.

More Based On The Fraternal Order of Police Data-ABC News (edited quotes)

323 police officers were shot in the line of duty this year, according to statistics released by the National Fraternal Order of Police, one of the largest police unions in the country.

The numbers are up 7% from 2020 and 13% from 2019, according to the FOP. In total, 60 law enforcement officers were killed by gunfire in 2022, the FOP reports. The numbers are down from 2021, however, which was a record-breaking year.

“Last year we saw more officers shot in the line of duty than any other since the National Fraternal Order of Police began recording this data in late 2015, and this year is not far behind,” FOP President Patrick Yoes said in a statement.

Texas, followed by Arizona, Georgia and California, had the most officers shot in 2022.

Of concern, the union said, 124 law enforcement officers were shot in “ambush” style attacks, which lead to more than half the deaths in 2022. The union said the year-end report will be released in mid-January.

Conclusions

Tens of thousands of police officers have left the job in recent years per the US Bureau of Labor Statistics and other sources.

I am aware of families telling their officer loved ones to get out of policing, and to get out now. The families accept the risks. What they refuse to condone is the perceived lack of public support.

Data continues to show that most Americans, regardless of demographics, trust or respect law enforcement. But it’s also obvious from numerous sources that many police officers feel judged or disrespected by many within society painting law enforcement with a broad brush based on the actions of a few.

There is nothing keeping police officers in place beyond public support. If one adds the dangerous nature of the job with high numbers of officers shot or assaulted or the tens of thousands leaving, it greatly adds to the complexity of crime control and citizen safety per data on proactive policing.
