Dear Colleagues: Pew is creating ground-breaking research on public safety issues. Please see the invitation to participate in the release of new data as to public attitudes towards crime and punishment.
We suspect that the data will be supportive of alternatives to incarceration and will indicate a public willingness to consider doing “something else” with non-violent offenders. If so, it will repeat a multitude of previous research saying something similar without much of an impact on policy.
Pew has been masterful in bringing together people from both sides of the aisle to forge compromises on incarceration policies.
While Pew-related efforts have recieved mostly favorable articles and reports, day-to-day media coverage regarding alternative and release programs throughout the country has been less than supportive. We’ll see where Pew’s announcement will take us.

Pew’s Announcement:
The Public Safety Performance Project commissioned focus groups and a national survey of voters to explore public attitudes toward crime and punishment, measure support for policy change, and enhance the way we communicate about these complicated issues.
Please join us on Tuesday, September 14 from 2-3:30pm EST for a web-based seminar to release the findings of the research.
The webinar will be led by Bill McInturff, partner and co-founder of Public Opinion Strategies, a national political and public affairs survey research firm. The New York Times has called POS “the leading Republican polling company” and the firm currently represents 17 U.S. Senators, six governors, and over 40 Members of Congress.
Mr. McInturff will be joined by Daniel Franklin, a Senior Vice President at the BenensonStrategy Group, which has worked with major nonprofits, unions and other advocacy groups to shape the public debate over a wide range of issues. Following the presentation, both Bill McInturff and Danny Franklin will be available for questions from the audience.
